In this article we answer the following questions:
- What does a fever do for the immune system?
- What is a normal body temperature for babies, adults, and the elderly?
- Which homeopathic remedy is best for a fever?
- What physical steps can you take to bring down a fever at home?
- When should you get medical help for a fever?
Your body knows what it’s doing. A fever isn’t a malfunction; it’s your immune system rising to meet a threat. Maybe your child came home from preschool burning hot. Maybe it’s you, aching under the covers with the flu. When you know how to support your body through a fever, you’ll find faster relief. You’ll also know when to reach for a remedy, when to let your body do its work, and when to consult your healthcare professional.
What your fever is telling you
The heat you feel when you have a fever does real work. A higher body temperature slows down how fast viruses and bacteria multiply, and activates your immune cells. This is why suppressing a fever too early can sometimes work against you rather than for you.
What is a normal temperature?
- Babies and children: 36.6°C to 37.2°C
- Adults: 36.1°C to 37.2°C
- Adults over age 65: 37°C
Homeopathic remedies for every age
When you’re choosing a homeopathic remedy to treat a fever, start by observing the symptoms, temperament and behaviour of the person with the fever.

*Dosage rules: Depending on the source of the homeopathic remedy, a dose could be 10 drops (if in liquid format) or 4-5 pillules or 1-2 tablets. Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Usually, doses are repeated until symptoms show improvement or the remedy picture changes and another remedy becomes indicated; once improvement occurs, discontinue the remedy. In acute cases dosing can usually be done hourly, gradually reducing frequency as improvement occurs, or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare provider.
A note on dosing: the principle stays the same at every age. Repeat the remedy only while symptoms actively call for it, and stop as soon as you see genuine improvement.
Physical ways to support your body
A lukewarm bath or sponge-down helps your body cool through evaporation. Ensure the water is not too cold, as cold water makes you shiver. Shivering holds heat in rather than letting it go. Keep clothing light and breathable, and only reach for a blanket if chills kick in. A cool, damp cloth on your forehead, neck, or wrists can provide quick relief.
Drink often. Fever burns through fluids quickly, so keep water nearby and sip throughout the day. Rest as much as you can. Your body needs energy for healing, not for anything else. Keep the room cool with a fan or open window if you can. Airflow can help your body release heat without triggering chills.

When your body needs more help
Consult your healthcare practitioner if a fever lasts three days or more in adults and older children, or an infant under three months has a fever at all. Call a medical professional if the temperature climbs above 39.4°C, if home care isn’t making a dent, or if you notice a stiff neck, a severe headache, confusion, trouble breathing, ongoing vomiting, or a rash that doesn’t fade when you press on it.
Trust your body’s process, but trust your own instincts too. If something feels wrong, get help.
